Germany begin another FIFA World Cup campaign under enormous pressure as Julian Nagelsmann's side faces tournament debutants Curaçao in their Group E opener on Sunday. After disappointing exits in the previous two World Cups, Die Mannschaft know that anything less than three points would be considered a major setback.
For Curaçao, however, this is history in the making. The Caribbean nation is making its first-ever FIFA World Cup appearance and arrives with nothing to lose, hoping to shock one of football's traditional giants.
Germany enter the tournament in excellent form, winning nine consecutive matches during their preparations and looking far more balanced than in recent years. Confidence is high inside the squad, but expectations are even higher.
The biggest boost for Julian Nagelsmann is the return of legendary goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who has recovered from a calf injury and is expected to start between the posts. Young full-back Nathaniel Brown is also set to make his World Cup debut after impressing during the build-up to the tournament.
Germany suffered one setback before the World Cup, with promising youngster Lennart Karl ruled out through injury and replaced by Assan Ouédraogo. Meanwhile, stars such as Jamal Musiala, Florian Wirtz, Kai Havertz, and Leroy Sané are all expected to feature from the opening whistle.

Curaçao may be newcomers to the World Cup, but Dick Advocaat's squad should not be underestimated. Built around several experienced players competing in European football, the Caribbean side has developed into one of CONCACAF's fastest-rising teams.
The good news for Advocaat is that he has a fully fit squad available, with no major injury concerns ahead of the historic opener. Captain Leandro Bacuna and winger Tahith Chong will be expected to provide leadership and attacking quality as Curaçao looks to frustrate Germany before striking on the counterattack.
Room; Martina, Van Eijma, Martina, Ogenia; Bacuna, Anita; Chong, Antonisse, Kastaneer; Livramento.
Expect Germany to dominate possession from the opening minutes. Nagelsmann's team will look to press aggressively, move the ball quickly through midfield and create overloads around Musiala and Wirtz.
Curaçao is likely to defend with a compact low block before trying to launch quick counterattacks through Chong and the pace of their wide players.
The longer Curaçao can keep the score level, the more belief they will gain. However, Germany possess far greater quality, depth and experience, and anything other than a German victory would rank among the biggest surprises of the tournament.
Set pieces could also play an important role, with Germany boasting a significant aerial advantage.
Germany simply have too much quality across every area of the pitch. While Curaçao's fighting spirit should make them competitive early on, the technical superiority of Musiala, Wirtz and Havertz is expected to make the difference.
Prediction: 🇩🇪 Germany 4-0 Curaçao
